About the Store

The Sengsongd Thrift Store is the very first thrift store in Palau. It offers gently used clothing, shoes, books, household items, and more—all donated by the community and sold at affordable prices. Every purchase supports the Palau Red Cross Society’s humanitarian programs, including disaster relief, emergency response, and community assistance.

The store was established on April 18, 2025 to provide a sustainable way to support low-income families and fund the Single-Incident Emergency (SIE) program, which delivers aid to individuals and households affected by fires, natural disasters, or other emergencies. In addition, Sengsongd encourages environmental care by giving items a second life, promoting reuse and sustainability throughout Palau.

Why is it called “Sengsongd” Thrift Store?

“Sengsongd” comes from the Palauan proverb:

A sengsongd a mrecherchii a klengoes
—“Small twigs can bring a soup to a boil.

This proverb reminds us that even the smallest actions can lead to meaningful impact. Just as twigs help bring water to a boil, every donation and purchase at our thrift store helps support the humanitarian work of the Palau Red Cross Society.

“Sengsongd” reflects Palauan values of sharing, resourcefulness, and community care. It encourages sustainability by giving gently used items a new life, while promoting the spirit of helping one another with what we have.

The name was thoughtfully chosen by Gin Bosil Ngirmidol, the winner of our community naming contest.
“Sengsongd” is more than just a name—it’s a symbol of how small acts of kindness come together to make a big difference.
